Icsid World Design Congress was an eye opener, especially when i’m just a student. Someone who is so new to this industry , knowing little about sustainability design, knowing little about how Dr, scientist, designer and much people coming from different profession comes together and make fantastic design that works.
I have to admit, the first day was basically crap for me. Mirene and myself was station at the lobby ushering all the delegates, visitors, vips up. Then we sneak in to the ballroom sitting at this cosy little corner call the ‘Kopitiam in 2050′ which basically looks like a cafe + home to sleep. Basically, all the works are about the future, how would 2050 be like? Designers coming up with futuristic design which look so frictional.
Today, was a little more amazing. We met a HongKongDI super cool lady designer, she’s so WOW can, she is a product designer, she make accessories and she’s gonna be a fashion designer soon! Yes, yes then we know what our jobs were, we sneak in early to listen to the presenters. I am really happy i sneak in early, surprisingly, i am so attentive, HAHA. Sat at the same cosy little area, i type down notes okay. So, i really like what this designer, Emily Pilloton’s presentation. Its so our age, like her design alot and the stuffs she do for the world is great. Little notes to share here, i started to write down only from the 3rd point,
1) Create system not stuff
2) Document share and measure
3) Create with what we have
4) We build
And 2 more interesting point, which sounds pretty logical to me.
• Don’t do what we don’t know
• Without hands on, designing is abstract.
I don’t know if it make sense to you, but after her explanation, its like, god, its damn logical.
So another little ‘frictional fact’ by another presenter, i can’t remember he’s name, i’ll go find it out.
• Future is friction
• Apply logic to the illogical using story telling.
• Life is cheap
• Carbon is crime
And more.
So, something that he said makes me think of EDWIN HOO.
Edwin Hoo, this is for you, but don’t kill me.
I talk to myself,
‘Edwin is a part time citizen’
He was saying something about part time citizen then i was like, sounds familiar uh.
Then, went up to level 4 for exhibition design, saw hell load of interesting design. I like that 5 senses booth from La Salle. We was playing with that slimy lemon gel in that particular box. Damn bloody disgusting! Then we had candy floss, latte, coffee art, cappuccino and so much more.
So, why do we have to sneak in right, we were the volunteers with some TP design students as well. It cost like about SGD$1700.00 to attend this World Congress. Fortunately, students are subsidize and only pay $50. Volunteers obviously free, but we need to get left over food with the organizers and do shit work. This lady call Jane is damn bad, she ordered us like some dog. HELLO lady, please be nice, we are not been paid okay. Joanne is a nice lady okay, learn from her please. hurrrr.
For your info, this week is Design Week.
